May 2012 Classes at the Freight and Salvage
Jamming the Blues

Thursdays, 7:00-8:15 pm, beginning May 3
w/Pete Madsen
$120.00 advance / $130.00 after April 23

For guitar players who want to learn how to solo over blues changes. We will take a basic 12 bar blues as our background format and use ideas based on scales, riffs and chord shapes to learn the art of soloing. This will be a lot of fun for those folks who have a little background in playing blues rhythms, but want to create lead lines that are rippin! Learn classic solo lines from players like Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton and many more. Some background in playing blues rhythm required, but other than that just a desire to put some heart (and muscle!) into your guitar playing.

Fingerstyle Blues Guitar
Thursdays, 8:30-9:45 pm, beginning May 3
 w/Pete Madsen
$120.00 advance / $130.00 after April 23

Do you love the music of Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Son House, Skip James, Blind Blake, Eric Clapton and Keb Mo? This class will teach you the fundamentals of acoustic blues guitar. The focus will be on fingerstyle blues: a style that was performed by the early practitioners of blues guitar playing. This means we will be learning how to play a steady bass line while simultaneously playing a melody on the treble strings! Other topics will include: learning a 12 bar blues, slide guitar, open D and G tunings.
*Participants should know basic first position chords; beyond that, all you'll need is a love of blues, and, oh yeah, a slide!
Pete Madsen is a teacher, writer, guitarist and performer based in Berkeley, California. He has written numerous lessons for Acoustic Guitar and Play Guitar magazines; and is the author of "FretMaster: Slide Guitar" and the "Fretmaster: Funk Book," both published by Backbeat books; as well as "A Guide to Acoustic Blues Guitar" and "The CAGED System for Guitar."
Pete currently teaches private lessons at The 5th String in Berkeley (3051 Adeline St. Berkeley), and classes at The Freight and Salvage (2020 Addison St., Berkeley).
Pete specializes in Acoustic Blues and Slide, playing the songs and styles of Robert Johnson, Eric Clapton, Big Bill Broonzy, Blind Blake and many more.
Lessons are fun and informative. Other styles include Rock, Electric Blues, Funk, Surf, Rockabilly and early Jazz.

Blues Fingerpicking Workshop

Gryphon Stringed Instruments
211 Lambert Ave., Palo Alto, CA 94306
Sat, Jan. 19, 2008 2- 4:00pm $35

Do you love the playing of Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Son House or Delta and Piedmont blues in general? Unlock the mystery of the right hand in blues fingerpicking. In this workshop designed for the beginning blues fingerpicker, you will learn about playing a constant bass with your thumb over a melody line played with your fingers. First we will learn about “dead-thumb” – playing a single string bass, with melody notes played on other strings. Then we will try an “alternating bass” – a bass that travels between two or more strings. The bass in early blues recordings drove the music with a “chug” and a “bounce” that help give the music its special rhythmic characteristics. Participants should have knowledge of first position guitar chords…beyond that just a love of blues and a desire to learn is all that is needed.

Strictly Rhythm Guitar

Six Thursdays, 6:30-8pm, Starting September 2

$120 advance/$130 after August 23
Whether you dream of being a lead guitar hero, or whether you just love strumming, most of your time playing guitar will be taken up with rhythm. This class will take you beyond simple strumming patterns (although that is part of what we will do) to learn some new rhythmic devices. Strumming, picking single strings, using “small” chords and muted brush strokes can all compliment your playing and make it much more fun and interesting. We will cover folk, blues and rock styles. We will also create multiple parts for two and three guitars. Students should know first position chords. You will need a guitar and a pick!

Acoustic Blues Guitar Classin SF!!!
with Pete Madsen
6 week class starting Monday June 13 –July 25 (no class July 4)
7-9pm
at

The Mariposa Studio
2808 Mariposa
between Alabama and Florida, SF
price: $150* includes book: A Guide to Acoustic Blues Guitar

In this class we will get a broad view of acoustic blues as it played by many practitioners of the style. The focus will be on the early players: artists such as Robert Johnson, Son House, and Big Bill Broonzy to name but a few. We will cover standard tuning, as well as open tunings like G and D. If you have never played in an open tuning before I think you will find it a lot of fun. The open tunings also give use an opportunity to do one of my favorite things: play some slide guitar.
We will also do a bit of fingerpicking and I have designed some exercises, which I think will help you get the gist of what goes on in a lot of the early blues guitar.
So much of the beauty and artistry of early blues guitar players was their ability to play complex rhythms using a steady bass against syncopated melodies.

The book A Guide to Acoustic Blues Guitar has over 40 songs of varying levels of complexity. We will be reading TAB and using the recordings on the provided CD, as well as supplemental exercises and recordings which I will e-mail to all class participants.

We will start out with a typical rhythm shuffle in the key of A. Then we will look at how Robert Johnson might have treated the same shuffle with a song very similar to his “Kind Hearted Woman.” From there we will continue with exercises and songs from Broonzy, Mississippi John Hurt and others.

Space is limited to 10 participants. Contact Pete at the addresses below to register:
